What causes snoring and why do some people snore louder than others?

Snoring is the sound produced by the vibration of tissues in the upper airway during sleep. When you drift into a deep sleep, the muscles in your soft palate, tongue, and throat relax. For many people, this relaxation is significant enough that the airway partially narrows. As you breathe, the air forces its way through this narrowed space, causing the surrounding tissues to flutter and vibrate. This turbulence creates the audible sound we recognise as snoring. In the UK, snoring is extremely common, affecting approximately 40 percent of adults at some point in their lives. 

The reason some people snore louder than others is generally down to the degree of airway resistance and the physical properties of their throat tissues. A louder snore indicates a more significant obstruction or a higher velocity of airflow attempting to pass through a restricted space. The primary causes of snoring

  • Neck Circumference: In the UK, clinicians often measure neck circumference as a predictor of snoring volume. A larger neck often means more soft tissue pressing against the airway. 
  • Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol is a potent muscle relaxant. It causes the throat muscles to relax more than usual, leading to a more complete collapse of the airway and a much louder snore. 
  • Sleeping on the Back: Gravity pulls the tongue and soft tissues backward. This position typically produces the loudest snoring compared to side sleeping.

  • The Sound of OSA: Snoring in OSA is often interrupted by periods of silence when breathing actually stops, followed by a loud snort or gasp as the brain forces the airway open. 
  • Daytime Symptoms: If loud snoring is accompanied by excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or irritability, it may indicate that your sleep quality is being severely compromised. 
  • Clinical Assessment: In 2026, the NHS uses the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to help determine if a patient needs a referral to a sleep clinic for further testing.

Yes. Options include mandibular advancement devices which hold the jaw forward, or nasal strips that help open the nostrils. A GP or dentist can advise on which is best for your anatomy. 

Is snoring more common in men? 

Statistically, yes. Men tend to have narrower airways and often carry more weight around the neck and chest, both of which contribute to a higher prevalence and volume of snoring. 

Should I be worried if my child snores? 

While occasional snoring during a cold is normal, persistent snoring in children is often linked to enlarged tonsils or adenoids. It is worth discussing with a GP to ensure their breathing is not obstructed. 

Can certain medications make me snore louder? 

Yes. Medications that cause drowsiness or muscle relaxation, such as certain antihistamines, sedatives, or sleeping pills, can significantly increase snoring volume.
