Can Generational Views on Behavior Affect ADHD Diagnoses?

Author: Victoria Rowe, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

Generational attitudes toward behavior can significantly impact ADHD diagnoses. Over time, societal views on what constitutes acceptable or problematic behavior have shifted, influencing how ADHD is recognized and diagnosed. In earlier decades, behaviors such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, or inattention might have been seen as a child being “difficult” or “disobedient” rather than indicative of a neurodevelopmental disorder like ADHD.

Parenting Norms and Shifting Views

Parenting norms have evolved alongside changes in the understanding of child development. In previous generations, parents and educators may have had a more rigid expectation of children’s behaviour, with less tolerance for impulsiveness or inattention. The rise of ADHD awareness in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, however, has led to broader recognition of ADHD as a biologically based condition, changing how symptoms are perceived. As a result, behaviors once deemed “normal” or “unacceptable” are now more frequently seen through the lens of neurodevelopmental and psychological explanations.

Historical Trends in Diagnosis

Historically, ADHD diagnoses were less common, and when made, they were often later in childhood or even adolescence. With each successive generation, there has been an increased understanding of ADHD, partly due to advocacy, research, and public awareness campaigns. As diagnostic criteria evolved, what was once considered normal childhood energy or mild inattentiveness now falls under the radar of clinical evaluation. Generational shifts in behavioral expectations have influenced not only the diagnosis but also treatment approaches.

Conclusion

Generational views on behavior have shaped the way ADHD diagnoses are made. With changing societal norms, what was once dismissed as poor behavior is now recognized as a legitimate neurodevelopmental disorder in many cases.
