Can accountability partners or “cleaning buddies” help sustain performance?

Author: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

For people with ADHD, staying on track with household tasks like cleaning and organising can be a constant struggle. The difficulty in maintaining focus, following through on tasks, and staying organised often leads to frustration and unfinished work. One effective strategy to help sustain performance is to work with an accountability partner or “cleaning buddy.” According to NHS guidance on ADHD, having external support can improve motivation and task completion by providing structure and encouragement.

Why accountability helps with ADHD

ADHD affects executive functions such as working memory, time management, and emotional regulation, making it hard to stay organised and complete tasks. As noted in the ADHD Evidence Project (2025), people with ADHD often struggle with task initiation and follow-through, leading to procrastination and disorganisation. The NICE ADHD guidelines (NG87) recommend using external supports, like accountability partners or structured systems, to help individuals manage tasks more effectively and stay motivated.

How accountability partners or “cleaning buddies” help

Boosting motivation

Having someone else involved in your cleaning or organisational tasks creates a sense of responsibility. Knowing that someone else is depending on you can provide the push needed to get started and stay focused.

Providing encouragement

Accountability partners can offer encouragement and positive reinforcement. This can help maintain motivation, especially when tasks feel overwhelming or discouraging.

Breaking tasks into smaller steps

A cleaning buddy can help you break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Working together can make the task feel less daunting and increase the likelihood of completing it.

Reducing procrastination

With someone else involved, the temptation to procrastinate decreases. An accountability partner can offer gentle reminders or help set specific times for cleaning or organising, reducing the mental load of remembering everything yourself.

Building consistency

Regular check-ins with an accountability partner create a routine and increase consistency. Over time, this helps build habits and reduces the stress of feeling like you have to manage everything on your own.

The NHS ADHD Taskforce Report (2025) emphasises the importance of external support in managing ADHD symptoms and improving task performance, making accountability partners a valuable tool for sustaining household routines.

Takeaway

Accountability partners or “cleaning buddies” can be incredibly helpful for sustaining performance with ADHD. By providing motivation, encouragement, and structure, these partners help reduce procrastination and improve consistency, making it easier to stay on track with household tasks.
