Are there any placebo-controlled studies on cannabis for fibromyalgia?

Author: Julia Sutton, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Clarissa Morton, PharmD

Interest in placebo-controlled trials examining cannabis for fibromyalgia is growing, but such studies are still relatively rare. Most available research has relied on observational data or open-label formats. However, a few blinded studies have started to shed light on how cannabis compares to a placebo in treating symptoms.

These trials aim to eliminate bias and ensure accurate, reliable results. Although findings remain mixed, they are a critical step in determining how effective cannabis might be for fibromyalgia patients.

What the research says about placebo-controlled trials

Here are some insights from current placebo-controlled trials and related research:

Inhalation Crossover Study

One small trial tested different cannabis strains, including a true placebo, on fibromyalgia patients. Only one THC-rich strain significantly reduced pain, while others showed minimal difference from placebo.

THC-Rich Oil Trial

In another blinded study, participants using THC-rich oil reported improvements in pain, fatigue, and mood compared to those receiving a placebo.

Review Findings

Systematic reviews of multiple trials indicate some benefit in short-term symptom relief, but the overall quality of evidence remains low due to small sample sizes and limited duration.

Ongoing Trials

New placebo-controlled trials are currently underway using standardised cannabis extracts. These aim to better understand treatment effects, dosage, and long-term outcomes.

In summary, while placebo-controlled trials on cannabis and fibromyalgia are still emerging, they provide valuable early indications of benefit. Patients interested in exploring this treatment should consult medical professionals familiar with cannabinoid therapies and the latest research developments.
