How Do Insurance Companies View Cannabis Treatment for Chronic Pain?

Author: Dr. Clarissa Morton, PharmD

Patients often ask whether insurance supports cannabis as part of their care. At present, insurance coverage of medical cannabis in the UK is extremely limited, with most patients paying privately for prescriptions and treatment.

For those living with general chronic pain, this can make access more challenging, as insurers typically exclude cannabis from standard health plans.

Insurance Policies and Cannabis Care

The way insurers approach cannabis reflects caution around legality, evidence, and cost.

Reimbursement of Cannabis

Currently, there is little to no reimbursement of cannabis options for patients. Most insurers cite the lack of large-scale clinical evidence as a reason for excluding cannabis-based products from their benefits packages.

Health Insurer Cannabis Policy

Each provider sets its own health insurer cannabis policy, and these generally advise that patients must fund treatment themselves. Some policies do, however, cover consultations with specialists, even if cannabis prescriptions are not included.

Coverage For Medical Marijuana

Looking internationally, coverage for medical marijuana varies widely. In some countries, insurers are beginning to provide limited support, but the UK remains cautious, waiting for stronger evidence before expanding benefits.

In summary, insurance coverage of medical cannabis is still rare, leaving most patients responsible for costs. Over time, greater research may shift this stance, but for now, cannabis is not part of routine insurance coverage for pain treatment.
