The carotid arteries are the primary vessels responsible for supplying oxygen rich blood to the brain. Because they are the main pipelines for cerebral circulation, any injury, blockage, or rupture of these arteries can lead to catastrophic consequences, including massive stroke or immediate death. Medical professionals monitor these vessels closely because they are often the site of fatty plaque buildup, which can obstruct blood flow or release fragments that cause brain attacks.

A dissection is a tear in the inner lining of the artery wall. Blood can enter the space between the layers, creating a flap that blocks blood flow or a bulge that can burst. This is a leading cause of stroke in younger adults and can be triggered by neck trauma or even forceful coughing.

Warning signs of carotid artery issues 

Because the carotid artery is the main supply line to the brain, problems often present as neurological symptoms. 

  • Bruit: This is a whooshing sound heard by a doctor through a stethoscope, indicating turbulent blood flow through a narrowed artery. 
  • Amaurosis Fugax: A temporary loss of vision in one eye, often described as a shade being pulled down, caused by a small fragment from the carotid artery blocking the eye blood supply. 
  • Transient Ischaemic Attack TIA: Brief episodes of weakness, numbness, or slurred speech that resolve quickly but indicate a high risk of a major stroke. 
  • Sudden Neck Pain: Intense pain in the side of the neck or behind the ear can sometimes indicate an arterial dissection.

Can a neck massage damage the carotid artery? 

While rare, very vigorous or deep tissue massage on the front of the neck can potentially cause a dissection or dislodge a piece of plaque in people with existing artery disease.

Is the carotid artery the same as the jugular vein? 

No. The carotid artery carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain, while the jugular vein carries deoxygenated blood from the brain back to the heart.
