Why Do I Often Underestimate the Time Needed for Tasks?

Author: Victoria Rowe, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

If you live with ADHD, you have probably said “this will only take ten minutes” and found yourself still working an hour later. According to NICE NG87 and NHS guidance, this is not a lack of awareness or effort. It is a recognised ADHD trait linked to time blindness and executive dysfunction, both of which alter how your brain perceives time and plans tasks.

Why ADHD Brains Misjudge Time

People with ADHD experience differences in working memory, dopamine signalling, and temporal processing, the brain’s internal clock. The Royal College of Psychiatrists explains that ADHD disrupts the mental ability to estimate how long something will take or remember how long similar tasks took before. This makes time feel abstract rather than measurable.

Research from PubMed (2024) shows that dopamine fluctuations also play a role: the ADHD brain focuses on what feels stimulating right now, not on how long it might actually take. As a result, we plan with optimism, not precision.

How to Recalibrate Your Sense of Time

Track and compare.

Use a timer to record how long everyday tasks actually take. Over time, you’ll start to build a more realistic internal “clock.”

Use external tools

Visual timers or scheduling apps (like Tiimo or FlowSavvy) show time passing in real form, helping ADHD users connect action to duration, an approach supported by NICE NG87.

Add a 50% buffer

When estimating time, multiply your first guess by 1.5. This creates space for the unexpected and helps reduce last-minute stress.

Chunk and checkpoint

Break longer tasks into 20–30 minute stages. Set reminders between checkpoints to keep your time awareness active.

Reflect and adjust

CBT and ADHD coaching (Lopez et al., 2018) teach self-monitoring, reviewing your progress weekly, which helps refine how you predict and plan time.

If you consistently underestimate time or feel stuck in last-minute rushes, professional ADHD support can help identify what is driving it. You can explore trusted online assessment options with ADHD Certify, a UK-based provider offering ADHD diagnosis and medication reviews, rated Good by the CQC.

Takeaway

Underestimating time is a neurological feature of ADHD, not a character flaw. By tracking, visualising, and adjusting with flexible tools, you can retrain your sense of time and plan your day with more calm and confidence.
