Can I ask for a referral if my doctor refuses ADHD testing?

Author: Harriet Winslow, BSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

It can be frustrating when a GP doesn’t believe your symptoms warrant an ADHD referral, especially if you’ve done your homework and feel confident in your concerns. But you do have the right to advocate for your health.

How It Helps to Know Your Options

When faced with GP refusal ADHD, knowing the next steps can give you more control over your path to assessment.

Be Clear and Persistent

If your GP dismisses your concerns, ask directly for a referral to a mental health specialist experienced in ADHD testing. Be polite but assertive, highlighting the specific challenges you face and your desire for a thorough evaluation.

Highlight Your Efforts

Bring notes, symptom tracking, or any previous support reports. Demonstrating preparation can help counter GP refusal ADHD and show that you’re serious about getting proper care.

Know Your Rights

If needed, request a second opinion or switch to another GP. Patients in the UK are entitled to seek further medical advice, especially when seeking specialist ADHD support.

Do not be discouraged by an initial “no.” Persistence and preparation can help you get the ADHD referral needed for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
