Which clinical trials evaluate gender-sensitive ADHD tools?

Author: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

The development of ADHD assessment tools that specifically address gender sensitivity is still in early stages. While many existing tools are widely used, few have been designed or tested with a clear focus on how ADHD presents differently in women and girls. Clinical research is beginning to explore how screening and diagnostic methods can better reflect these differences, especially in the context of gender-sensitive screening

Although traditional tools often rely on hyperactive or external symptoms, more recent approaches are examining whether the subtler traits seen in girls and women, such as internal distraction, emotional overwhelm, and chronic overcompensation, are being missed. Some clinical trials ADHD researchers have started to include gender as a key factor when evaluating or developing assessment tools, testing whether updated criteria or language better captures underdiagnosed profiles. This marks a shift in how ADHD assessment tools are created and validated.

What this research shows and where more trials are needed

  • Very few clinical trials have tested new assessment tools specifically designed for women or gender-diverse people.
  • Most existing studies rely on secondary analyses, identifying gender gaps in how standard tools perform.
  • Child-focused research is leading the way by proposing early screening measures that include inattentive and internalised traits often seen in girls.
  • Digital interventions and behavioural assessments are beginning to explore gender-responsive scoring, but clinical trials ADHD in this area remain limited.

As demand grows for tools that reflect real-world experience, more gender-focused trials will be needed to make ADHD screening truly inclusive. If you’re interested in exploring assessment options tailored to your needs, visit providers like ADHD Certify for consultation.
