Can Family History of Autism Show via Inherited Sensory Traits?

Author: Beatrice Holloway, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

The family history of autism can sometimes reveal inherited sensory traits, as hypersensitivity is a common feature among neurodivergent individuals. These sensory traits, which involve heightened or diminished responses to sensory input such as light, sound, or texture, can often be passed down through generations. While not every person with a family history of autism will exhibit these sensory traits, there is a strong genetic link between family members who experience similar sensitivities.

Common Symptoms of Sensory Traits

Individuals with inherited sensory traits may be more sensitive to certain stimuli. Common symptoms include:

Over-sensitivity:

Responding strongly to loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells.

Under-sensitivity:

Seeking out intense sensory experiences, like touching textures or seeking deep pressure.

These sensory sensitivities are not only common in autism but are also often inherited. If parents or siblings display similar sensory traits, children may also experience these sensitivities, even if the full autism diagnosis isn’t present. This is how it helps:

Family history:

Observing patterns in sensory traits can provide insight into whether these characteristics are inherited.

The presence of sensory traits in family members could indicate a hereditary factor, potentially making a person more prone to neurodivergent traits.
