How Do Autism and ADHD Symptoms Overlap?

Author: Beatrice Holloway, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

The autism ADHD overlap is a well-documented area of clinical complexity. Both are neurodevelopmental disorders, and they frequently share behaviours that can make diagnosis more difficult. Traits such as impulsivity, restlessness, and social challenges are common in both, which can lead to confusion, misinterpretation, or even dual diagnoses.

What makes things more complicated is that individuals with autism can also have ADHD and vice versa. In fact, research shows a high rate of co-occurrence. Still, despite their shared traits, the underlying reasons for the behaviours often differ. That’s why it’s important for clinicians to look beyond the surface and consider the individual’s full developmental picture.

Shared Traits Between Autism and ADHD

Here are some of the most common behavioural similarities that contribute to diagnostic confusion:

Difficulty with Focus

In ADHD, this is typically due to inattention or distractibility. In autism, it may be a result of sensory overload or an intense focus on a specific interest.

Impulsivity and Interrupting

ADHD-related impulsivity can cause frequent interruptions. In autism, this may happen due to difficulty recognising social cues.

Struggles with Social Interaction

Both conditions may present with challenges in forming or maintaining relationships, but for different cognitive and emotional reasons.

Understanding the autism ADHD overlap helps improve diagnostic accuracy and ensures tailored support that addresses each condition properly.
