Can environmental exposures cause epigenetic shifts tied to autism?

Yes, certain types of environmental exposure can lead to epigenetic changes that may increase the risk of developing autism. Epigenetics refers to chemical modifications to DNA, such as methylation, that regulate how genes are turned on or off without altering the DNA sequence itself. When these modifications are disrupted by environmental factors, they can influence early brain development in significant ways. 

Examples of environmental risk factors include exposure to air pollutants, pesticides, heavy metals or maternal stress during pregnancy. For individuals already genetically predisposed to autism, certain environmental exposures may heighten the risk by disrupting how genes are expressed. This gene–environment interaction helps explain why autism presents differently across individuals, even within the same family.
