Are there any approved cannabis-based medications for AS?

Author: Dr. Stefan Petrov, MBBS

Currently, there are no cannabis-based medications specifically approved for ankylosing spondylitis, but cannabis access in the UK does include treatments that can be prescribed off-label. Navigating cannabis law requires working with a specialist who understands the legal framework and therapeutic options.

Under UK laws, patients with AS may be eligible for certain cannabis-based treatments if other therapies have not been effective. This includes medicines derived from cannabis but regulated under strict medical protocols. Ongoing cannabis research continues to evaluate the benefits for inflammatory conditions like AS, which may expand access in future.

Patients must have proper medical documents and a thorough clinical evaluation before receiving treatment. Most prescriptions are fulfilled through private clinics that operate under strict guidelines.

What You Need to Know

Off-label use is permitted

While not condition-specific, some cannabis-based products can be used for AS if clinically justified.

Prescriptions require a specialist

Only certain doctors can prescribe cannabis in the UK, and documentation must show treatment resistance.

Legal framework is evolving

With more trials and cannabis research, more targeted approvals may emerge in the future.

Proper documentation is key

Patients must provide full medical documents and treatment history to be considered.

Visit providers like LeafEase for personal consultations on which cannabis-based medications may be suitable for your AS under current UK law.
