Can cannabis trigger AS flare-ups in some individuals?

Author: Dr. Stefan Petrov, MBBS

Though cannabis is widely used for relief, there are rare reports of cannabis AS flare-ups among certain individuals. In these cases, instead of easing symptoms, cannabis may intensify discomfort. Understanding your body’s response is crucial, especially if you suspect a marijuana inflammation spike after use.

While the science is still developing, it’s possible for cannabis to trigger symptoms of AS by interacting with the immune system or increasing sensitivity to pain. Flare-ups can sometimes result from product type, dosage, or frequency of use. Patients prone to flare causes from cannabis might experience more stiffness, fatigue, or emotional imbalance following consumption. An immune reaction to weed is uncommon but may contribute in sensitive cases.

What to Watch For

Symptom escalation post-use

If your discomfort increases after using cannabis, keep a journal to track what strain, dose, or timing may be responsible.

Worsening fatigue or anxiety

For some, THC-heavy strains can disrupt rest and mood, aggravating symptoms rather than soothing them.

No relief or diminished effects

Lack of benefit could suggest a mismatch in strain type or cannabinoid profile, which might contribute to flare-like symptoms.

Unusual immune reactions

In rare cases, cannabis can influence immune signalling. If symptoms feel unfamiliar or escalate rapidly, seek medical advice.

Visit providers like LeafEase for personal consultations if you’re concerned about cannabis contributing to AS symptom flare-ups.
