Can patients travel with medical cannabis prescribed for AS?

Author: Dr. Stefan Petrov, MBBS

Patients with a prescription for medical cannabis often wonder if they can maintain cannabis access while travelling. The answer depends on destination, transport method, and documentation. Even with legal use in the UK, travel restrictions and international differences in UK laws can create complications.

While domestic travel within the UK is generally safe with proper documentation, flying abroad requires extreme caution. Many countries do not recognise UK medical prescriptions, and possession could result in legal risks. Even travelling through airports with medical cannabis could trigger security concerns if not pre-approved.

What to Know Before Travelling

Check the laws of your destination

What’s legal in the UK may not be recognised elsewhere. Always verify before departure.

Carry documentation

Bring your prescription, ID, and proof of diagnosis. You may also need a letter from your clinic.

Notify airlines and customs

In some cases, advance permission is required. Failing to declare can result in seizure or worse.

Avoid travel to countries with zero-tolerance policies

This includes many in Asia and the Middle East, where possession is treated as a criminal offence.

Visit providers like LeafEase for support with travel documentation and to understand how your cannabis access might be affected when abroad.
