Are There Any Global Initiatives Promoting Cannabis Research for CRPS?

Author: Dr. Clarissa Morton, PharmD

As awareness of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome grows, global cannabis and CRPS research is beginning to take shape across borders. While research efforts have historically been localised, recent years have seen increased collaboration between universities, healthcare systems, and cannabis-focused research organisations around the world.

These partnerships aim to generate high-quality evidence on the safety, efficacy, and patient experience of cannabis use in CRPS care, especially in countries where regulatory frameworks are opening up. The result is a slow but promising rise in coordinated studies and trials.

What’s Happening on the Global Stage

Here are some examples of how international efforts are gaining momentum:

  • Multinational collaborations
Programmes are emerging that link data from different populations and care systems, enabling more comprehensive cross-border pain studies.
  • Emerging clinical trials

Countries like Canada, Israel, Australia, and parts of Europe are launching international cannabis trials that explore cannabis in neuropathic and inflammatory pain, with CRPS increasingly included in research scopes.

  • Policy-driven projects
Some governments are funding global CRPS initiatives as part of broader efforts to understand cannabis’s role in chronic pain and reduce reliance on opioids.

While much of the work is still in the early-stage, these efforts reflect a growing global recognition of CRPS and the need for diverse, data-driven treatment options.

With sustained effort, global cannabis and CRPS research may provide the evidence base needed to improve care and guide responsible cannabis policy worldwide.

Providers like LeafEase keep patients informed about emerging studies and opportunities to engage with international cannabis research initiatives.
