Can Veterans Access Medical Cannabis for EDS Through the VA?

Author: Dr. Clarissa Morton, PharmD

For veterans with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) , accessing medical cannabis as a treatment option can be a crucial part of managing chronic pain and other symptoms. However, many wonder whether veterans access to cannabis for EDS is covered under VA policy and how it fits into the existing healthcare system for military veterans.

Understanding Veterans, Cannabis, EDS and VA Policy

  • Current VA Policy on Cannabis Use:
As of now, VA policy does not allow for the prescription of medical cannabis for any condition, including EDS. Although cannabis is legal in many states for medical use, the federal government still classifies it as a Schedule I substance, meaning the VA cannot prescribe it to veterans for chronic pain relief or other conditions, even if it is legal in the state where the veteran resides.
  • Exploring Military Benefits and Alternative Treatment Options:
While military benefits don’t currently cover medical cannabis, veterans with EDS may still have access to alternative treatments, such as CBD products that do not contain THC. Some veterans may also seek private healthcare providers to obtain cannabis products legally if their state allows it. It’s important to understand that even though VA policy restricts access to cannabis, there may be other routes for veterans to receive appropriate care.
  • Seeking Chronic Pain Relief Outside of the VA System:
Many veterans with EDS turn to other forms of treatment, including chronic pain relief therapies like physical therapy, acupuncture, or private medical cannabis consultations. For veterans considering cannabis as part of their pain management strategy, consulting with a private doctor who understands both EDS and the legal landscape is essential for navigating this treatment option.

The Road Ahead for Veterans Cannabis EDS Access

While veterans access to cannabis for EDS is not yet fully accessible through the VA, ongoing conversations around cannabis legalisation and policy changes may eventually lead to more inclusive healthcare options for veterans with chronic conditions like EDS. Veterans should stay informed about changes in both federal and state policies regarding medical cannabis use.

If you’re a veteran with EDS and looking for more information on accessing cannabis for chronic pain relief, it’s crucial to consult with knowledgeable healthcare providers.
