Are there any approved cannabis-based medications for fibromyalgia?

Author: Julia Sutton, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Clarissa Morton, PharmD

With growing interest in cannabis for pain management, many fibromyalgia  patients are asking whether there are any approved cannabis medications they can access legally. While the UK has made strides in regulating medical cannabis, its availability for fibromyalgia remains limited and often unclear.

Currently, only a small number of cannabis medications have been authorised for use in specific conditions. Though fibromyalgia is not one of the approved conditions on the NHS, private clinics may prescribe cannabis-based products if other fibromyalgia therapy options have failed.

What to know about approved cannabis medications

Here are key facts patients should be aware of when considering cannabis medications as part of their fibromyalgia therapy:

Sativex (Nabiximols)

Approved for multiple sclerosis, not fibromyalgia, but sometimes used off-label in private care for pain management.

Epidyolex

Typically used for rare epilepsy syndromes. It contains CBD and may be considered by specialists for off-label prescribing.

Specialist Approval Is Required

All cannabis medications must be prescribed by a GMC-registered consultant with appropriate expertise in pain or neurology.

Off-label Prescribing is Legal

Doctors can legally prescribe cannabis products for fibromyalgia if they believe the benefits outweigh risks, even if not NHS-approved.

Private Clinics Offer More Access

Most approved treatments for cannabis in fibromyalgia are accessed through private care, where options are broader and waiting times shorter.

Though NHS support is limited, patients exploring fibromyalgia therapy through cannabis medications may find valid routes via private prescriptions. Consulting a medical professional with experience in cannabinoid therapy is the best way to assess suitability and treatment potential.
