Are there clinical trials on cannabis for fibromyalgia?

Author: Julia Sutton, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Clarissa Morton, PharmD

Interest in clinical trials exploring cannabis for fibromyalgia  has grown, but the evidence remains limited. Few large-scale trials have been conducted, and much of the current research is based on small samples or observational data. As a result, conclusions about cannabis’s effectiveness are still cautious.

In the UK, guidance currently recommends the use of CBD for fibromyalgia only within research settings due to a lack of robust findings. Observational data from national registries has captured experiences from patients using prescribed cannabis, including those with fibromyalgia, but these are not considered high-grade evidence. Systematic reviews continue to emphasise the need for larger, more rigorous clinical trials.

Key insights from existing clinical trials

Here is a summary of what we know from current clinical trials and related research:

Scope of Research

Only a small number of studies fewer than 20 have examined cannabis in the context of fibromyalgia, usually with limited participants and varied methodologies.

Efficacy Outcomes

Many trials report modest improvements in pain, sleep, or quality of life, but the strength of the evidence is considered low due to short duration and study design.

Symptom Improvements

Some trials using synthetic cannabinoids have shown improvements in sleep and reduced pain when compared with standard medications.

Ongoing studies

Several ongoing studies are currently examining cannabis as a pain management tool, including its use alongside traditional therapies like opioids.

While existing clinical trials offer early signs of benefit, they are not yet sufficient to form definitive clinical guidance. Until more consistent and large-scale research emerges, cannabis for fibromyalgia should be approached with care and medical supervision.
