What is Adult ADHD Inattentive Presentation?

Author: Phoebe Carter, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

Adult inattentive ADHD is one of the most common subtypes of ADHD in adults. Unlike the hyperactive or impulsive presentation, which involves more visible symptoms like fidgeting and impulsivity, the inattentive type ADHD is characterised by persistent struggles with focus, organisation, and task completion. Adults with this presentation often experience difficulty maintaining attention to details, following instructions, and staying on track, which can impact both professional and personal life.

Symptoms of Adult Inattentive ADHD

Difficulty Focusing:

Adults with adult inattentive ADHD often find it hard to sustain attention on tasks, especially those that require extended focus, such as reading, paperwork, or meetings. They may get easily distracted by external stimuli or internal thoughts, making it difficult to stay engaged.

Disorganisation:

People with this type of ADHD often struggle with keeping their lives organised. Tasks like managing time, keeping track of appointments, or maintaining an orderly workspace can be particularly challenging.

Forgetfulness:

Forgetting important tasks, deadlines, or details is a common symptom. This can lead to frustration and feelings of inadequacy in both work and social environments.

Procrastination:

Individuals with inattentive type ADHD may put off tasks, especially those that feel overwhelming or require sustained mental effort. This leads to delays, incomplete projects, and unnecessary stress.

Lack of Follow-through:

Completing tasks can be difficult, as those with inattentive ADHD often start projects but struggle to finish them.

Managing Adult Inattentive ADHD

Although ADHD subtypes in adults may vary in presentation, the inattentive type can be managed with a combination of behavioural strategies, therapy, and medication. A tailored treatment plan can help adults with inattentive ADHD stay organised and improve their ability to focus and complete tasks.
