Is There a Genetic Test for Inattentive ADHD?

Currently, there is no standalone genetic test that can diagnose inattentive ADHD . While research shows a strong hereditary link, with ADHD often running in families, diagnosis still relies on behavioural assessments, clinical interviews and observation. This is especially true for ADHD in adults, where symptoms like forgetfulness and poor focus can be subtle or misattributed.

That said, understanding the genetic component can be helpful in building a more informed ADHD therapy plan. If a parent or sibling has ADHD, a clinician may be more likely to consider it as a factor during evaluation, especially when symptoms like procrastination or poor time management are persistent.

What Diagnosis and Treatment Look Like

Although genetic testing is not available, these approaches form the core of accurate diagnosis and personalised care:

Clinical assessment tools

Diagnosis typically involves structured interviews, symptom checklists and input from multiple sources. These help confirm whether behaviour patterns align with inattentive ADHD.

Medication and behavioural strategies

Once diagnosed, treatment often includes medication to improve focus and reduce distraction, along with tools for improving routine and organisation.

ADHD therapy options

Therapies such as CBT are widely used to help manage emotional regulation, boost motivation and improve daily functioning in adults with ADHD.

If you’re exploring a diagnosis or want to understand your own patterns better, a professional assessment is still the best route. Visit providers like ADHD Certify for personal consultations and support through diagnosis and treatment.
