What is the Feingold diet?

The Feingold diet ADHD approach was developed in the 1970s as a way to manage hyperactivity and attention problems through nutrition. It is based on the idea that removing certain artificial additives and specific foods can improve focus, behaviour, and learning. Today, the Feingold diet ADHD method is still considered by some families who are looking for non-medication strategies to support daily life.

The diet works by using food elimination. This means avoiding synthetic colours, flavourings, preservatives, and salicylates (natural substances found in some fruits and vegetables). After a period of removal, foods are slowly reintroduced to observe whether they cause any behaviour changes. While not everyone responds to the diet, some studies and personal reports suggest improvements in restlessness, irritability, and concentration.

How It Helps

Behaviour changes

Following the Feingold diet ADHD plan may reduce irritability and improve cooperation in some children.

Focus and attention

By avoiding artificial additives, some individuals may notice clearer thinking and better concentration.

Food elimination insights

The structured process of food elimination can help families identify which items make symptoms worse.

In summary, the Feingold diet ADHD approach is not a cure but may help manage symptoms by focusing on artificial additives and food elimination. For certain individuals, these adjustments can lead to meaningful behaviour changes and more stable daily routines.
