How Does Atomoxetine (Strattera) Work on Norepinephrine and Dopamine in ADHD?

Atomoxetine (brand name Strattera) is a non-stimulant ADHD medication that works differently from traditional stimulant drugs. Instead of boosting dopamine directly, atomoxetine primarily targets norepinephrine by inhibiting the norepinephrine transporter NET. This action helps to regulate attention, impulse control, and other symptoms of ADHD by modulating both norepinephrine and, to a lesser extent, dopamine levels in the brain.

While stimulants like methylphenidate and amphetamines focus on increasing dopamine availability, Strattera’s mechanism is more selective. Inhibiting NET increases the amount of norepinephrine available in synapses, which plays a critical role in regulating attention, focus, and emotional responses. The effect on dopamine is indirect but still significant, as norepinephrine can influence dopamine pathways in areas of the brain responsible for executive function and motivation.

How Strattera Works: The Mechanism

Strattera works by selectively blocking norepinephrine reuptake, boosting its availability in the brain to improve focus and reduce impulsivity.

NET Inhibition

Atomoxetine’s primary action is to block the norepinephrine transporter, leading to higher concentrations of norepinephrine in the brain. This enhanced norepinephrine activity improves attention, reduces hyperactivity, and supports impulse control, which are key aspects of ADHD.

Impact on Dopamine

While Strattera does not directly increase dopamine like stimulants, the increased norepinephrine indirectly affects dopamine function, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. This area of the brain is responsible for attention and decision-making, where dopamine plays an important role.

Non-Stimulant Option

As a non-stimulant ADHD medication, Strattera is a preferred option for individuals who cannot tolerate stimulants or have a history of substance misuse. Its more gradual onset and fewer side effects make it a suitable choice for many.
