What are tips for staying focused during meetings with ADHD?

Author: Phoebe Carter, MSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

For many people with ADHD, staying focused in meetings can feel like trying to tune in to one radio station while ten others are playing at once. Background noise, fast conversations, and long sessions can make it hard to follow every detail. But evidence shows that a few simple strategies can make meetings easier to manage and more productive.

1. Prepare visually and mentally

According to the Buckinghamshire NHS Adult ADHD Service (2024), reviewing the meeting agenda and jotting down key goals beforehand helps direct your attention. Visual preparation gives your brain a “map,” reducing anxiety and distraction once the discussion begins.

2. Choose your environment carefully

NICE NG87 guidance (2024) recommends reducing distractions where possible such as sitting near the front, away from doors or windows, and keeping your phone on focus mode. For online meetings, close unused tabs and mute notifications to maintain concentration.

3. Use small sensory tools

The East London NHS Adult ADHD Pack (2025) supports using discreet fidget tools, noise-cancelling headphones, or even textured objects to manage restlessness. These small adjustments can keep energy steady without disrupting attention.

4. Engage actively to stay anchored

Mayo Clinic (2024) and Cleveland Clinic (2024) both note that active listening like summarising key points or asking clarifying questions, helps maintain focus. Taking brief written notes or highlighting action items can make long meetings more manageable.

5. Take mindful breaks

Research published in the BMJ (2025) found that short, structured breaks improve focus and emotional regulation for adults with ADHD. Stepping away for a minute or stretching between topics can reset attention and prevent mental fatigue.

Takeaway:

Meetings can be demanding, but a few adjustments; preparation, sensory tools, and active participation can transform the experience. These techniques don’t just boost focus; they also build confidence and reduce stress.

If you often struggle with attention or workplace focus, consider seeking personalised guidance. ADHD Certify offers affordable, online ADHD assessments and follow-up support to help you find strategies that fit your working style.
