What are low‑cost options for ADHD evaluation?

Author: Harriet Winslow, BSc | Reviewed by: Dr. Rebecca Fernandez, MBBS

Getting an ADHD diagnosis can feel expensive, but there are lower‑cost or even free pathways you can explore. A low-cost ADHD assessment doesn’t always mean low quality; it often comes down to which route you take and what supports are available in your area.

One of the best options is to pursue assessment through public health systems or national services. In the UK, for example, assessments via the NHS are free and funded by the state. Some areas now offer a “Right to Choose” pathway that lets you pick a provider offering ADHD services under NHS funding , meaning you don’t pay directly.

If public services are too overloaded or unavailable, you might find affordable ADHD testing through local charities, university psychology clinics, or mental health support organisations. These groups often offer sliding‑scale fees or subsidised assessments.

You could also explore whether your GP or local mental health team will refer you to a specialist via existing services. Sometimes specialists in training (e.g. in university departments) conduct assessments under supervision at reduced cost.

In private clinics, fees can be high, but some may allow you to pay in instalments or offer limited services (such as a screening consultation) at reduced rates. Be sure to ask what is included whether the assessment report, follow‑up, and treatment advice are part of the price.

How It Helps

Spreads the financial burden

A low-cost ADHD assessment means you can access help without a large upfront sum.

Maintains diagnostic integrity

Affordable routes via public or charitable services often still follow agreed standards and diagnostic criteria.

Makes progress possible

Even if you can’t afford full private assessment now, exploring affordable ADHD testing or a cheap ADHD diagnosis gives you a foot in the door for care and support down the road.

You deserve an evaluation that fits your finances and needs. Don’t let cost be a barrier to getting help.
